In this altar for George Meadows, we wish to represent the value of George’s life as a human being, as a hard-working coal miner, and our wish for him to have received equal justice under the law for a crime he did not commit. That it was indeed the self-evident truth that he was created equal, that he was equally endowed by his Creator and deserved his unalienable Rights, to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
An asen is an altar or memorial metal sculpture traditionally made in the county of Benin and dedicated by a family to a specific deceased individual. They function like visual obituaries, with imagery that refers to the deceased occupation, religious beliefs, and family heritage and it can be compared to an inscription on a tombstone or a newspaper obituary caption--"beloved husband and father" or "longtime area resident" or "noted author." They also include symbols that represent the final wishes of the deceased.
We honor him by acknowledging his life and his last words…”Oh my god, you ain’t going to hang me, are you?” George Meadows 01/15/1889
